1973 TOPPS ALL-TIME HOME RUN LEADERS

IF YOU'RE SCORING AT HOME,
 THAT'S 2,041 STARS.
THE BABE GOT SERIOUS AFTER
DITCHING PITCHING.

THE FRONT PAGE

  • Let's get this out of the way right now: No card ever produced can match the star power of this one. The three kings. For that reason, it's one of my favorites and as good as any reason to make this my first card to examine.

THE BACK PAGE

  • Love the yearly home run totals. This makes better reading than the sports section at the breakfast table. Or in the WC.

PHOTO PLAY

  • Nothing fancy, these '73s. The black and white mug shots have a nice vintage feel to them.
  • Babe Ruth got top billing, but his rule over the power game was about to end.

EXTRA, EXTRA

  • I bought this early on while building my '73 set, which is about 75 percent complete.
  • This is a tough card to find in decent condition, being it's the first card of the set.
  • Met Willie Mays and Hank Aaron at card shows in the '80s. Let's just say their numbers are more impressive than their personalities.
