HAIR OF THE DOG

MULTI-TOOL PLAYER: HIT, RUN, 'FRO.
Dedicated to those feeling a little queasy today, courtesy of ’81 Topps, which for a set featuring caps as graphics sure had a lot of players photographed without them.

Hair facts, myths and quotes

Hair is the fastest growing tissue in the body, second only to bone marrow. ... About 115 feet of hair fiber is produced every day on the average adult scalp.*

GET THAT FINGER OUT OF YOUR EAR!
YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE IT'S BEEN!
The average scalp has 100,000 hairs. Redheads have the least at 80,000; brown- and black-haired people have about 100,000 and blonds have the most at 120,000. ...*

BIRDS OF A FEATHER ...
... GROOM TOGETHER.
Ninety percent of scalp hairs are growing and 10 percent are resting. ... It is normal to lose 100 hairs per day. ... You must lose more than 50 percent of your scalp hairs before it is apparent to anyone. ... Many drugs can cause hair loss. ... Thyroid imbalance and iron deficiency are reversible causes for hair loss. ... Over 50 percent of men by age 50 have hair loss.*

Myth: If I shave my hair bald it will grow back thicker: It will appear thicker at first because the base of your hair is always thicker than the tip, but you will not notice any difference when it grows back to full length.**

 WILL CALL FOR JHERI'S KIDS.
Myth: Wearing caps and hats can cause hair loss: Unless you are wearing a cap that is tight enough to block your blood circulation to your hair follicles, wearing a cap has nothing to do with hair loss. Ask yourself, how many baseball players or golfers have hair loss?**

African Hair: Almost flat or ribbon like in shape, twisting, turning, bending and zig-zagging as it grows. At every twist and turn, the hair tends to be thinner and therefore susceptible to breakage at each of these points along the hair shaft. Because of its shape, the cuticles on nappy hair tend to be raised and do not lie flat against the hair shaft. As a result, nappy hair absorbs light and does not reflect it. Hence, nappy hair does not shine. Raised cuticles also act like opened doors, causing nappy hair to be very porous. It will suck up moisture like a sponge but will also have a hard time retaining it; hence, nappy hair is inherently dry. Raised cuticles also cause nappy hair to feel coarse to the touch, rub and catch easily on one another leading tangles, knots and even more susceptible to damage and breakage if it isn’t cared for properly.***

PRACTICES VU-DO.
Caucasoid hair: More oval in shape. The more oval the hair, the more likely it is to be wavy. The more round the hair, the more likely it is to be straight. The cuticles on Caucasoid hair tend to lay flat, allowing the hair to retain moisture, reflect light and shine.***

1980 FIELDING %: .965; HAIR OUT OF PLACE %: 0.
Asian hair: Almost perfectly round resulting in bone straight hair. The cuticles lay flat, reflects light, is very strong and holds moisture.***

DID NOT HAVE AN '82 HIGHLIGHT CARD.
LOOK, IT'S RALPH MACCHIO!
NO, IT'S DENEY TERRIO!

Learning about these differences can help you make better choices when it comes to taking care of and the styling of nappy hair without the expectations that you can make your hair do something that it’s not designed to do. If you’re going to be a happy nappy, the best thing you can do for yourself is to accept what your hair can do and what it cannot do based on its structure and characteristics.***
