INSIDE THE ALBUM: 1984 TOPPS

THE FIRST PAGE: AS BALANCED AS MARY LOU RETTON ON THE BEAM.

This 792-card set could be considered the poor cousin to 1983, which was one of the decade's best. The '84 design copies '83 but with less style. The boxy, blocky crude cubist presentation manages to de-emphasize the photo. That said, I like the design. Always have. It just feels right for '84. The set was lacking in star rookie power, with only No. 182 Darryl Strawberry (who had his first Topps card in the '83 Traded set) and No. 8 Don Mattingly of note. Topps issued its annual 132-card Traded set for the fourth consecutive year, featuring the company's first cards of No. 104T Bret Saberhagen, No. 42T Dwight Gooden, No. 62T Jimmy Key and No. 100T Jose Rijo. In addition, for the first time, Topps offered a Glossy Send-in set by mail and one Glossy All-Star card in each Jumbo pack.
