ODDBALL ROLL CALL: 1990 SMOKEY BILL LEE

SPACEMAN AND SMOKEY BOTH AGREE:

USE CAUTION WHEN YOU SPARK UP.

WHY I LIKE IT

  • An interesting card because Bill Lee wanted to become a forest ranger. But when it came time to choose a college, he opted to go to a school specializing in baseball instead of forestry. Plus, his family had ties to USC, which had one of the country's best baseball program's headed up by Manager Rod Dedeaux.
  • The back's great, with six little adorable bears wearing baseball gloves who apparently found a box of matches somewhere on the field. Looks like they interrupted Smokey doing some groundskeeping.

WHAT'S THE STORY?

  • The United States Department of Agriculture was the primary sponsor of the 12-card set, featuring USC players who made it to the majors. It was issued during a series between the Trojans and Stanford on Feb. 23-25, 1990.

HOW I ACQUIRED IT

  • Saw it on COMC for a couple dollars during the Black Friday weekend and grabbed it.
